Transgender Specific Care

Why Transgender care?

The needs of the transgender and gender expansive community have long been under-met and overlooked by the mental health community. Transgender individuals are a high-risk population for mental and physical health problems and are consistently and systemically underserved by the American medical system. Regular harassment and discrimination contribute to high rates of stress and—combined with adverse social, political, and economic risk factors—make transgender individuals significantly more likely to experience poor health outcomes. Structural, institutional, and individual barriers in access to care, along with a lack of cultural competency from many health care providers, contribute to the large disparities in health between transgender and cisgender populations.

What is a Transgender care therapist?

A transgender care therapist (TCT) is a mental health professional who has taken extensive trainings and education on the specific needs of the trans and gender expansive community. Certified by the International Transgender Certification Assessment, a TCT is qualified to provide assessment and counseling to trans and gender diverse individuals seeking mental health support. TCTs are also trained to provide counseling and support, as well as write recommendation letters for individuals seeking gender affirming hormone therapies and surgical interventions. A transgender care therapist can be an excellent ally for a transgender or gender expansive individual seeking clinical intervention for gender and body dysmorphia related to the transition process.
