Maggie Sheppard

MMT, LLPC, MT-BC

(She/Her)🏳️‍🌈

Maggie is a biracial, queer woman who brings her full, authentic self into her work as a music therapist and clinical counselor. She believes deeply in the power of human connection, the resilience of the individual, and the healing, transformative potential of music. Maggie centers her work in cultural humility, compassion, and collaboration, honoring each client’s unique story and lived experience.

Maggie has always been passionate about helping people unlock their potential and achieve personal growth. She believes that every person already possesses the skills they need to lead a fulfilling life—and that music therapy and counseling can be powerful tools in helping them realize, access, and nurture those skills. Her therapeutic approach is never “one size fits all.” She believes in tailoring each experience to the complex and multifaceted identities of her clients, integrating their histories, cultures, communities, and values into the therapeutic process.

At the heart of Maggie’s work is a belief that therapy is inherently political. She strives to cultivate an inclusive, empowering therapeutic environment grounded in social justice, cultural responsiveness, humility, equity, and anti-oppressive practices. Her goal is to support clients not only in navigating personal challenges, but also in recognizing and challenging the broader systems that may be impacting their well-being.

Maggie completed her undergraduate degree in Music Therapy at Augsburg University and earned her Master’s in Music Therapy and Clinical Counseling from Slippery Rock University. She is a Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) and a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC), with clinical experience across the lifespan in both individual and group settings.

Maggie has provided care in diverse contexts, including inpatient psychiatric facilities, hospice care, long-term and memory care, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), intensive outpatient programs (IOP), substance use and recovery treatment, and adult day programs. She is trained to provide both music therapy and counseling to individuals, families, and groups.

Her music therapy practice is rooted in Human-Centered, Community, Culturally Inclusive, and Resource-Oriented approaches, as well as affirming frameworks for neurodivergent and disabled individuals. As a counselor, Maggie draws from Critical Humanist, Culturally Responsive, Strengths-Based, Systems and Trauma-Informed, Social Justice, and Anti-Oppressive perspectives. Maggie sees herself as a collaborator in the therapeutic process—someone who walks alongside her clients, holding space for exploration, healing, growth, and transformation.
